In CEPT, we don't have subjects, we have studio, mandatories and electives. In CEPT, every course is of 5 years. Within 2 years, we student is supposed to score 200 credits, i.e. 20 credits a semester. In the foundation year, one is awarded 20 credits if one passes a semester. However, things get a bit more technical as one moves into the second year. A studio of 14 credits, 2 mandatories of 2 credits each and 1 elective or SWS (Summer-Winter School) of 2 credit.
The studio can be called the main subject. If you fail your studio, you fail the semester. Studios are divided into Level 2 (L2) and Level 3 (L3). Students in their 2nd and 3rd years are in L2. Students of 4th and 5th years in L3. This semester, 19 studios were offered for L2 students of Urban Design Program. Students are to apply for studios according to their priorities. Students are shortlisted for interviews for their first priority. If one clears the interview, he/she gets the studio. If one fails to get one's first priority, one has to appear for the 2nd, 3rd priority and so on. Maximum seats a studio offers is 16 seats. Waiting for results after one's interview can be nerve-wracking. I was lucky enough to get the studio I picked as my first preference. Mandatories are allotted by the college. We had almost 150 options for electives. From the 150 options, only 25% were available for 2nd-year students. We had to pick 4 priorities from these. Out the priorities, one elective is allocated randomly.
We have an option of opting for an elective or SWS. SWS is basically a workshop kinda thing that is conducted in various locations. It is generally said that students opt for SWS only to travel. My friends and I also plan to do the same next semester.
So, today was my first day of studio. It was a good day. Studio hours are from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm on Mondays and 9:30 am to 6:30 pm on Thursdays. I had fun. It was tiresome staring at the screen all day, but I liked it. I liked the people in my studio and I love my faculty. We have a vertical studio system. In my studio, there are 5 people from 2nd, 5 people from 3rd and 3 people from 4th year respectively. I was a bit sceptical about my seniors, but all of them seem very nice and friendly. We don't have professors in CEPT, we have faculties and teaching associates (TA). They're really warm people. One of the main reasons why I opted for the was because I took an instant liking to my faculty on the orientation day. We didn't do anything much today. In the first half, before lunch, we had introductions. We were told to talk about Ahmedabad, our home town, CEPT life in general, our hobbies, etc. I spoke about how I unexpectedly got into CEPT and my initial struggling days in Ahmedabad. I basically complained about not having non-vegetarian food in Ahmedabad. I saw people smiling when I said that. I was brutally honest in everything I said. My faculty said she'll give me full marks for honesty. I was happy. I guess I made a good impression.
In the second half, we watched a presentation. It was basically a walk organized by a company called Remote X. It is an audio-guided walk wherein a group of 50 people are taken to various parts of a city and basically look at the city in ways they haven't before. Our first exercise for the semester is to plan a similar walk within our own cities. We have to submit an audio file of 20 minutes and a map of the neighbourhood. We need to have a script prepared by Thursday. Also, we were divided into groups today. We will be working in groups of 3 (my group has 4 members) throughout the semester. Our faculty is a sweetheart. She ended class an hour early. She even said, she'd have started class at 10:30 am if it was possible. Seems it isn't. She's supposed to conduct class for 15 hours every week.
Though it was a good day, somewhere I was thinking about how things would have been different if we were on campus. We'd have all been standing in a queue outside the stationery shop, first thing in the morning. Also, we'd have explored our new building. Foundation students were in a separate building. Today we'd have shifted to our respective department building. And I'd have bought plants to keep on my table. Also had a minimum of 10 nimbu panis from the canteen. It'd have been good to be back on campus. But yeah, that won't be possible until December at least. And honestly, I think it'd be very wrong of me to complain right now.
I spoke to a friend for over an hour after class, slept for some time and woke up had dinner, called another friend (yeah I like talking a lot) and wrote this blog. Yeah, I guess that's all I did today. Tomorrow, I have my first elective class.
