I was really looking for to today's elective. We had a session with Esther Davis scheduled at evening 4:30 and submission of our midterm assignment int the morning. I had been working all night yesterday until 4 am. I'd finished my graphic and thought that I'll wake up at 9 and finish my narrative. But I woke up at 8 am somehow.
Okay, for my elective submission, we had to come with a Utopian narrative of Ahmedabad kind of like the book Invisible Cities, make a graphic depicting the same, come up with a name and a story. Also, we have to come with a name for the book that will the compilation of all our assignments.
For my graphic, I made a Warli painting. I decided to make it Illustrator because 1. I don't know to click proper pictures, all the pictures that I click of my sheet, suck and in turn, the work that I've done, also looks bad. 2. I thought it'll be easier on Illustrator because I can easily copy-paste things. But by the time I finished, I realized that probably it was one of my worst mistakes. It took me more than 6 hours to complete the entire thing. It turned out well, but I was exhausted by the time I finished it. I even put a story asking if people thought I was stupid? But most of them were very sweet. People applauded my patience. and honestly, the final outcome was good. William Thekkan messaged me. I was honestly flattered. He even suggested that I make a change to make it better.
By the time I woke up, I had several texts from my friends, all of this said it's lit. Aditi also said it's lit. I finished the narrative by 10. And then Supriya Ma'am sent a text saying, there won't be class and the deadline for the submission is 10th. I thought she meant 10 am. I submitted it by 10 am. Only later did I realize that she meant on the 10th of September. I thought I'll ask Ma'am for feedback, but then I knew I won't have time to rework on it. I had been putting off all studio work saying I need to elective and mandatory submission.
Mazha, Arco Mujigae
(Mazha means rain in Malayalm, Acro and Mujigae mean rainbow in Spanish and Korean respectively)
You can visit Mazha only once in a year. Why? Because it is buried under the ground on all days except one. The city comes to life only on the day when it rains while the sun is shining. The residents of the city both humans and beings hibernate on the days that the city remains buried. On the day, the city becomes alive, what joy and celebrations! People dance, visit their friends and family, animals and birds rejoice and walk all around the city. The residents celebrate the day as it is their last day, which it could be. What if it doesn’t rain ever again on a sunny day?
Though the city is awake only one day of the year, the society functions just like it does everywhere else in the world. There are rich and poor. The people with tallest palm trees in their backyard are considered the richest people and the people who do not have trees are the poor. The poor people who don't have trees were cursed by Arbol, the Tree Goddess for failing to respect her offspring, the Saplings.
As the city is alive only for one day, the residents require a very quick and efficient mode of transportation. Now, this is a privilege only the rich are blessed with. They have zip lines connecting their palm trees to the neighbour's palm trees. However, the poor have no option but to use bullock carts. Sometimes, these poor people get buried under the ground before they reach their destination as the day comes to an end and wake up a year later with no memory of where they are, far away from their homes. It’s no good land to be cursed by Arbol, the Tree Goddess.
Name of the Book: Kita-E-Khwaab
(Book of Dreams
I named it so because, according to me all of us will come up with a narrative that is kind of dreamlike, which cannot be possible technically, so yeah).
I slept for a while in the morning after submitting it. I woke up, made a canvas painting and then after a lot of procrastination, finally sat to work. I had to make a pre-pandemic, post-pandemic map and complete an elevation.
There was a class at 4:30 and honestly, I was disappointed. Esther David's lecture wasn't as impressive as I expected it to be. Maybe I had too high expectation, I don't know. one thing that really interested me was Jewishness. She did talk about her Jewish ancestry and some anecdotes of people failing to pronounce her name correctly. But I couldn't keep track through the rest of the class. Also, the network at her home was terrible. Only half of what she said could actually be heard. She told us about Jews in Gujarat also about a couple of her books. She is a knowledgeable, sweet old lady, but the video lecture didn't do justice to her.
More election drama followed today. Manifesto reading for the third round of elections was scheduled today. An hour before the manifesto reading, Vishesh Mahnot wrote a long-ass mail accusing Praswed Patel and Sidhraj Desai of doing some घपला with the council fund. Now I don't know how much of it is true. I sat and watched my seniors accusing each (Meet and Aryan Iyer were the leaders. I was surprised to see that they even joined) other and fighting for 2 straight hours. We finally had a nominee for the post of Admin Secretary but it seems he won't be elected. God only knows what will happen now. I'm not being judgemental, but I feel Parth Mehta (nominee for President), is not capable of becoming the president. Now, I wish Arnav had won.
I actually started working at 10:30 after the manifesto reading was done. I finished the plans, mailed it to Aditi and Muskaan and decided to sleep. We had decided that we'll discuss with Ma'am in the afternoon, so I had time in the morning to complete the elevation.
